039: Leaving a Legacy of Love for Our Children: A Musical Tribute to My Mama

A daughter's recollections of her mother's last few years of life, and the songs that brought them together

July 14th marked 15 years since my mother passed away from breast cancer.  I’ve been thinking about this milestone for months, and it occurred to me that I could use music to honor her.

Most people don’t know that I am a singer, and within this episode, you will hear me sing five different songs that remind me of my mother.  I will tell the story behind each song, and you will see how they all weave together to create a picture of the legacy that my mother left for me.

This episode is truly a piece of my heart.  My hope is that it will bring you hope and perspective in your own motherhood journey.

036: Momming Like a Boss: Using Corporate Leadership Strategies in Our Homes // Whitney Archibald of ‘How She Moms’

Momming Like a Boss :: Whitney Archibald of 'How She Moms'

When Whitney Archibald started working as a magazine editor after college, she naturally excelled in this leadership role.  She effectively managed her team, created clear objectives for their work, and maintained focus and excellence in her responsibilities.

When she was pregnant with her third baby, she decided to start staying home full-time with her children–and one day she looked around her chaotic home and realized that she was not excelling in this “second career” in her life.  Determined to make a change, she started putting as much commitment into learning how to manage her home as she had put into learning how to manage her responsibilities at work.

She discovered that many of the same strategies that she had applied in her business life could be applied in this new phase of her life–and today on the podcast she is sharing those strategies with us!

Listen in to find out how you can take small but meaningful steps towards “Momming Like a Boss” and managing your home and family more effectively and with more confidence.

035: Modeling for our Children How to Endure with Hope // Ralphie Jacobs of Simply on Purpose and her father, Bob Peters

Modeling for our Children How to Endure Life's Trials with Hope Ralphie Jacobs and Bob Peters

How do we stay positive when we face incomprehensible trials?  How do we endure well and allow our struggles to soften and strengthen us?  And perhaps most importantly, how do we model this kind of resilience for our children?

Today on the podcast, Ralphie Jacobs, the respected parenting expert from Simply on Purpose, talks about her heroic father who, as a father of nine children, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when Ralphie was five years old.  He lost the ability to walk by the time Ralphie was ten, and he has endured MS for over 30 years.

This interview is especially meaningful because Ralphie’s father joins us on the call.  Ralphie wanted him to hear her tribute to him and to add his own thoughts to the discussion–and it is a truly tender and touching conversation between a beloved father and “his girl.”

I felt honored to be apart of this sacred conversation, and I know you will feel the same after you listen.  You will come away braver, more determined to stay positive, and completely inspired to invest in your children when they are young–so you can have rich relationships with them that last a lifetime.

022: Cleaning Strategies for the Naturally Messy Mom // Candi Kidd of Operation Organization

Cleaning Strategies for the Naturally Messy Mom __ Candi Kidd

Since I was a little girl, I have left a “wake” behind me everywhere I go–cupboards left open, shoes kicked off in the middle of the hallway, and spills on the kitchen counter that should’ve been wiped up immediately but I didn’t even notice them.

Luckily, I have a very wise friend who is teaching me better habits.  Candi Kidd (who was our guest in Episode 001!) teaches moms who are naturally messy like me how to keep their lives more tidy and orderly.  And her tips can really help any mom, even if you are naturally a neat-freak (P.S. you amaze me), because we all live with children…and children bring chaos and confusion along with them everywhere they go.

Join Candi and me as we dive into these three takeaways:

1) Be a detective to find and then solve the messy spots in your home.

2) Lower the “activation energy” it takes to get started with cleaning.

3) Focus on completing one J.O.B. per day.

018: Speak Your Partner’s Love Language // Celeste Davis of Marriage Laboratory

Celeste Davis of the website Marriage Laboratory shares the "experiments" that she did with the five love languages

“I got this crazy idea in my head 3.5 years ago to start a marriage blog, but I had so many doubts, like ‘Why would I do that?  I’m not that great of a wife…’ But the idea just coming back and back… And eventually I kind of thought, ‘I can just try things and tell people how it went. I can experiment. I can conduct marriage experiments.”

This is the premise behind “Marriage Laboratory,” a marriage blog run by Celeste Davis and her husband Rich (who happens to be a real-life scientist studying immunology).  This past year, she conducted experiments on the five love languages by simply focusing on one per month.

Today on the podcast, Celeste will share some of her experiments and outcomes in the following areas:

1) Words of Affirmation: Send your husband a loving note, text, or email every day for a month

2) Quality Time: Dedicate ten minutes every single night to just sitting and talking with your spouse, with no phones anywhere in sight!

3) Physical Touch: Have sex every other day for a month (don’t worry–she doesn’t get too steamy on this one, but her story is pretty fascinating)

Don’t miss this conversation with a wife and mother who is dedicating her life to loving her family better, in simple but profound ways.
