371: 3 Spaces to Organize for the Most Summer Fun // Jen Martin from Reset Your Nest

It’s about that time of year when I start to look for home-organizing hacks for the summer

Are you like me and you feel like clothes are multiplying? 🫨 My kids (and even my husband and I!) are changing clothes multiple times a day between swimming, working, and playing out in the hot sun chasing our dog, Petra.

I am definitely feeling like it’s time to get some good systems back in place in our home, and honestly, summer is a great time to do some organizing because we have more free time as a family.  If you’re also feeling ready to do a summer reset, my conversation with Jen Martin will give you many great ideas. Jen Martin is the founder of Reset Your Nest, a luxury home-organizing business based out of Utah. She started Reset Your Nest in 2020 right before the onset of Covid. In just a few years it has grown to a large team of organizers. Jen has always had a passion for design and organization and has loved seeing how creating beautiful and calming spaces for families truly changes lives.

Aren’t you excited to learn from her? In this conversation, Jen shares 3 spaces you can focus on to help increase the peace and maximize your summer fun. Let’s jump right in!

Jen’s Home-Organizing Hacks for the Summer: 3 Spaces to Help Maximize Your

Summer Fun

1. The Car.

Keep a running list of things you wish you had in the car when situations come up (muddy shoes, wet kids, hungry kids, scraped knees, no napkins, etc.) Use your middle console (or similar space) to keep the necessary items. Using zipper pouches and photo boxes, divide and categorize the items from your list. Buy little garbage cans to keep throughout your car so there’s a place for trash Keep cleaning supplies in your car so you can easily wipe up spills and smears. Keep games in the car to help when there are long, unforeseen waits (Rachel’s family loves Uno and Sleeping Queens!).

2. The Garage.

Identify the pain points in your garage and start there. We often ask too much of our garage – consider, if possible, moving things to other spaces like storage closets, attics, etc. Identify what is the most important use of your garage right now, for the summer, (maybe it’s bikes, scooters, tools, or camping gear?) and find a way to downsize or relocate the rest. Try to keep only necessary seasonal items in the garage- rotate out the stuff you don’t need. If your space is small, consider overhead hanging racks and an outdoor shed.

3. The Kids’ Spaces.

Use the long summer days to work with your kids to organize their bedrooms and play spaces. When kids have a say instead of imposing a system on them, they are much more likely to maintain that system. Also, remember that sometimes you will have to try a couple of different systems to figure out what works. Don’t give up–keep working with your child to find a solution that works for them. Here’s a picture of my son’s Lego system. We worked on this together, and he still uses it!
