Brooke Romney is the queen of modern manners for teens.
If you missed it, our last episode was an interview I did with Brooke about friendship problems in the teen years. I hope her words in that interview resonated with you like they did with me.
This episode is a little bonus addition where I asked Brooke to share three mini conversations we can have with our teens to help them get better at friendships.
(Because, let’s face it, most teens need some help learning how to be a good friend! Does anyone else feel like they have a toddler again? 🥴)
Brooke bases these mini conversations on her series of flipbooks all about modern manners. Her books include: 52 Modern Manners for Today’s Teens, 52 Modern Manners for Today’s Teens Vol. 2, and 52 Modern Manners for Today’s Kids. If you haven’t had a chance to check out these flipbooks, go look now! They are a fantastic resource!
I love using Brooke’s flipbooks as a starting place to have super important discussions with my kids about topics that I might not otherwise think to bring up with them, and I think these books are such a remarkable tool for families that I wanted to feature them prominently here for all of you.
Okay, that’s enough from me! With no further ado, let’s jump into Brooke’s modern manners!
3 Modern Manners for Friendship from Brooke Romney:
1. Find new friends.
When your friends are mistreating you or bringing you down, it’s time to find new friends. You might feel alone at first, but you will find people out there who are like you and who treat you well.
2. Celebrate others.
Celebrate others when something good happens to them, even if you wish it had happened to you. Don’t rationalize or downplay when something good happens to someone else. Give others the chance to be the star.
3. Wait for your turn to talk.
When you have something to say, it can be hard to wait, but interrupting is not polite if it’s not an emergency. Wait for a break in the conversation to say something. If something is very important, kindly say, “excuse me.”
Aren’t these great tips for friendship? You know, now that I think about it… we adults could probably use help with all three of these modern manners sometimes, too! 😜
