435: How to Make Decisions Without Overthinking // Kendra Adachi of The Lazy Genius

Decision-making as a mom can feel… intense. Learn how to stop overthinking decisions today!

From big life decisions to small everyday choices, it’s easy to spiral into overthinking. We want to get it right and make sure everyone is okay. We want to honor our time, energy, and values—but sometimes, we don’t even know what our values are.

That’s why I’m so excited to share this encore conversation with Kendra Adachi, author of The Lazy Genius Way and host of The Lazy Genius Podcast. In this episode, Kendra offers three powerful mindset shifts that can help you feel less frantic and more grounded as you navigate decisions in motherhood.

These tools also illustrate the first principle in my Self-Assured Motherhood (SAM6) Framework—Voice Your Values—which is all about identifying what matters most to you so you can move through motherhood with more confidence and clarity.

3 Takeaways from Kendra Adachi on How to Stop Overthinking Decisions:

1. Make the decision smaller.

One reason we spiral when trying to decide is because we make the decision feel huge. We project it far into the future or give it more weight than it needs. Kendra encourages us to shrink the scope. Instead of asking, “What school should my child attend for the next 12 years?” ask, “What feels right for this year?” When you focus on this season, decisions become more manageable—and less overwhelming.

2. Name what matters.

If you’re struggling to move forward, try taking a step back and identifying what matters most to you in the situation. Is it peace of mind? Financial stability? A sense of beauty or creativity? When everything feels like it matters, nothing stands out. That’s why Kendra recommends creating a list of possible priorities—and then narrowing it down. And if that feels too hard, flip the process and ask, “What matters least?” Either way, clarifying your values brings powerful clarity to your decision-making.

3. Decide once.

This was one of my favorite takeaways from the episode. “Decide once” means you make a decision one time—and keep it until it no longer serves you. You might decide that every Tuesday is taco night. Or that every birthday gift will be a board game or art supply. Or that you’ll only buy dresses with pockets (yes, that one’s mine). When we eliminate the need to constantly revisit small decisions, we free up mental space and reduce stress. It’s one of the simplest—and most powerful—ways to lighten your mental load.
