445: How to Set Boundaries without Damaging Relationships // Rachel on Happy Mom Summit

Learning how to set boundaries as a mom has been one of the most important shifts in my motherhood—because without them, resentment and exhaustion take over.

When my kids were younger, they often came bursting into my office while I was recording podcast episodes. At first, I thought letting them interrupt me was the loving thing to do—that a “good mom” should always be available. But what I started to notice is that my voice would shift the moment they walked in. I went from being calm and focused to sounding short and tense.

That’s when it hit me: avoiding boundaries wasn’t strengthening our connection. It was slowly draining it.

So many moms tell me that they resist setting boundaries because they don’t want to seem unkind or selfish. But what I’ve learned is that boundaries are actually one of the most compassionate things we can offer—not just for ourselves, but also for the people we love.

This week on the podcast, I re-aired an interview I did with JoAnn Crohn of the No Guilt Mom Podcast for her Happy Mom Summit. JoAnn kindly gave permission to share our conversation here, and I think you’ll find it freeing and practical. Together, we talked about how to set compassionate boundaries in three steps:

How to Set Boundaries as a Mom: 3 Tips!

1. Brainstorm how the boundary is compassionate

Before you set a boundary, take time to reflect on how it’s actually an act of love. Maybe it’s insisting your child gets the sleep they need, even if they resist bedtime. Or maybe it’s saying no to extra work commitments so you can show up as a more balanced and reliable employee.

When you can see how a boundary blesses both you and the other person, it becomes so much easier to follow through without guilt.

2. Practice articulating the boundary with love

Setting boundaries can feel awkward at first, but like any skill, it gets easier with practice. One tool I love is what I call the “love sandwich”: begin with kindness, clearly state your boundary, and then end with kindness again.

For example:

“Thank you so much for thinking of me for this opportunity. I won’t be able to help this time because of my family’s needs, but I wish you all the best and I’d love to support in another way.”

This helps you be clear and honest without coming across as cold or harsh.

3. Hold the boundary with consistency and kindness

This is where the real challenge begins. Some people will respect your limits right away, while others may push back. Their reaction is often more about their own emotional maturity than about you.

Stay steady and kind, repeating your boundary if necessary. Over time, people will learn to trust that when you say yes, you mean it—and when you say no, you mean that too. This consistency makes you a safer and more reliable person to be in relationship with.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin or guilty about saying no, I want you to remember this: boundaries don’t mean you love less. They create the space for you to love more freely, with honesty and steadiness.

💜 And if this conversation resonates with you, it’s just a small taste of what I teach inside my Self-Assured Motherhood program.
