446: Is Perfectionism Good or Bad? // Katherine Morgan Schafler

What is Healthy Perfectionism? And can perfectionism actually be powerful?

Have you ever thought of your perfectionism as something “bad”? I know I have. For most of my life, I believed that caring too much, trying too hard, or wanting things to be “just right” was a flaw I needed to fix.

But what if perfectionism could actually be healthy? Katherine Morgan Schafler, a psychotherapist and the author of The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control, believes it can. In our conversation on the podcast, she explains that perfectionism is not something to tame or hide—it’s a natural drive that can become healthy perfectionism when it’s guided by compassion and clarity.

Her perspective was such a relief to me, and I think it will be for you too.

3 Takeaways on Healthy Perfectionism:

1. Clarify your values for this season.

One of the traps of perfectionism is believing you need to uphold every single good value at once—kindness, patience, adventure, honesty, and so on. The truth is, you simply can’t do it all. Katherine suggests narrowing down to five values that matter most in this current season of life. Write them down, then get specific about how each value shows up in your daily routines. Just as important, name the values you are not focusing on right now. By doing this, you protect yourself from the trap of trying to “secretly” do everything—and you give yourself the freedom to live fully into what matters most.

2. Understand that balance doesn’t exist.

We’ve been told for years that if we just plan better, schedule smarter, or find the right system, we’ll finally achieve balance. But as Katherine explains, no one is perfectly balanced—not in the way we imagine. Instead of striving for that elusive ideal, we can think of life more like surfing: sometimes we lean heavily into work, sometimes into family, sometimes into rest. The goal isn’t to stay still—it’s to keep shifting based on the wave we’re riding. Real balance isn’t about perfectly managing every task; it’s about finding an inner equilibrium that feels right for you.

3. Understand that punishment doesn’t work

Many perfectionists believe that the only way to improve is to be harder on themselves. But punishment—whether it’s harsh self-talk, withholding joy, or pushing ourselves past the point of exhaustion—doesn’t actually create change. True discipline sets us up for success, while punishment just creates pain. Katherine emphasizes that self-compassion is the real key to growth. It’s not about letting yourself off the hook; it’s about giving yourself the support and kindness you need to keep moving forward, even when you stumble.

Katherine’s insights reminded me that perfectionism isn’t something I have to fear. Healthy perfectionism can be a part of who I am, and with the right perspective, it can be a source of energy, creativity, and joy.
