Have you ever noticed that some of the parents in Disney movies aren’t exactly the best role models? They love their kids deeply, but their fears, expectations, and blind spots often get in the way of connection.
As I rewatched a few classics recently, I couldn’t help but think, These parents could really use the Self-Assured Motherhood program. And while they may just be cartoon characters, their struggles mirror the very real challenges we face as moms.
That’s why in this week’s episode of 3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms, I’m exploring three key parenting lessons from Disney movies through the lens of my SAM6 framework. Because sometimes, studying cartoon characters makes everything more fun (and surprisingly relatable!).
3 Takeaways on Disney Parenting Lessons:
1. Moana and the power of Voicing Your Values.
Moana longs for the ocean, while her father insists she stay safely on the island. At first glance, it looks like simple rebellion versus authority—but when you view it through the lens of values, the conflict makes sense. Chief Tui values security and tradition, while Moana values freedom and adventure. Neither set of values is wrong; they’re just different. The same is true in our families. When we pause to name our core values, we can see our loved ones more clearly, reduce unnecessary conflict, and make decisions that align with what matters most to us.
2. Frozen and how to Support Their Struggles.
Elsa’s parents tried to solve her struggles by isolating her from others and encouraging her to hide her emotions. Their fear sent the message that her powers—and her feelings—were dangerous. How many times do we, as moms, fall into that same trap of trying to “fix” or protect our children from their struggles? The truth is, our job isn’t to save them from challenges, but to support them through challenges. That might mean helping them access resources, teaching them to name their emotions, or simply standing steady as they learn to manage something hard. Support builds resilience; solving can unintentionally create shame.
3. Brave and the gift of Gathering the Good.
Queen Elinor spends much of the film criticizing her daughter Merida for not being ladylike enough. In doing so, she overlooks her daughter’s bravery, creativity, and unique skills. How often do we do the same in our homes—focusing on our child’s weaknesses and missing their strengths? In SAM, I teach moms how to intentionally retrain their brains to look for the good. Research shows that what we focus on grows, and when we start noticing the small strengths our kids display, we create more positive interactions and a stronger bond. Gathering the good doesn’t mean ignoring challenges; it means shifting our attention so we don’t miss what makes our kids shine.
Even though they’re just cartoon characters, the struggles of Disney parents remind us of this simple truth: when we voice our values, support our children’s struggles, and gather the good, we become the kind of moms our kids really need.
