448: Join Our Team! A Word from our SAM Sisters

Do the ups and downs of parenting ever feel like a solo sport? If you’ve ever wished motherhood was a team sport—a group of women who understand, encourage, and grow alongside you—you’re not alone.

You may have friends who care about you, but when it comes to really opening up about the struggles of motherhood—the yelling, the guilt, the constant decision fatigue—it can sometimes feel like you’re carrying the weight by yourself.

That’s why one of my students, Emily, said something that touched me deeply: “SAM made parenting feel like a team sport.”
She was talking about the Self-Assured Motherhood program, which I’ve been teaching for the past four years. It’s not just a course with weekly classes and homework; it’s a circle of women who are learning and growing together. And when you have a team like that, the daily challenges of motherhood don’t feel quite so heavy.

Today I want to share the voices of three moms from SAM—Christine, Patty, and Shelby—and the lessons we can learn from their experiences.

3 SAM Sisters & Why Motherhood Can Be A Team Sport:

1. Growth Happens in Stages—And Practice Counts (Christine)

Christine, a mom from Utah, joined SAM hoping to respond more calmly when her kids pushed her buttons. She told me about the four stages of change we study in the program: unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and finally unconscious competence.

In her words, she started out very aware of what she wanted to do differently, but she still struggled to follow through. Over time, though, she began pausing before reacting, repairing more quickly when she did lose her cool, and communicating more openly with her kids.

The sweetest proof of her growth came in the form of a handwritten note from her daughter: “When you yell at me, you calm down in a few minutes and say sorry. And I want you to know that you are loved.”
Christine realized that her kids were noticing her progress—and that the effort she was putting in was making a real difference.

2. Connection Strengthens Regulation—for You and Your Kids (Patty)

Patty described herself as a stressed-out, angry mom when she first joined SAM. She often lost her temper and then felt crushing guilt afterward. Through the program, she gained tools to regulate her own emotions and offer her daughter the safe presence she needed.

She shared a story about her four-year-old, who used to push her away and only want her dad when she was upset. Over time, though, her daughter began climbing into Patty’s lap for comfort, seeking her help, and trusting her more fully.
Patty connected this shift directly to the inner work she had done in SAM: “I used to escape into my phone to numb myself.

Now I know how to take care of myself in ways that actually restore me, so I can show up differently for my family.”
Her story is such a powerful reminder that when we regulate ourselves, we create space for our children to trust us with their big feelings too.

3. A Supportive Framework + A Supportive Team Equals Durable Change (Shelby)

Shelby, who has been part of SAM since the very beginning, said she was hesitant to sign up at first. It felt like a big commitment. But she quickly realized she had found a place where she could be real, vulnerable, and supported.

Over the years, she’s grown from quietly watching replays to actively contributing—and now she’s stepping into leadership as a Community Leader for incoming moms. She told me: “In the past, I would spiral and catastrophize my kids’ misbehavior. Now I can steady myself and handle what’s in front of me calmly, without leaping to worst-case scenarios.”

That’s the magic of SAM: the curriculum gives you practical tools, and the Sisterhood gives you the encouragement to keep applying them when life is messy.
