Hello, my friends. It's me again! I'm back! If you've been listening to the podcast this summer, you already know that my Communications Manager, Steph, stepped in to record some of my intros for episodes, and I am so so grateful to her for doing that. We had an unexpected death in my family that has completely changed our world, and I just needed some space and time over the past two months to work as little as possible so I could heal and be with my family. I am so incredibly thankful for my team members at 3 in 30 who made that possible for me and to all of you listeners who have given me grace and also sent love, support, and prayers my way. I hope to eventually record a podcast episode where I talk a little bit more about what I've learned and experienced this summer as my family and I have experienced this loss and grief together, but I'm not quite ready to do that yet. Maybe sometime in the coming months! But in the meantime, I'm so happy to be back today, recording my own intro to an episode that really means a lot to me.
Today's episode is all about how to support your nervous system through the ups and downs of life through simple somatic skills that help you to feel calm and safe within your body. My guest is Layne Burkette, a licensed professional counselor who specializes in somatic and nervous system work, and a mom of four herself. Many of you may already know her name because she was our platinum sponsor at this year's Self-Assured Motherhood retreat, where she taught a room full of moms tools like these in real time. I mentioned her work a few months ago on the podcast when I talked about the retreat, and I'm so glad to be able to really spotlight her on the show today because what she teaches women is so so important. She and I actually recorded this episode before I experienced that devastating loss in my family, and I have to tell you that I have utilized the tools that she talks about in this interview many times over the last few months, when I've felt panicked over this loss and had a hard time sleeping. I have come back to her breathing practices and somatic tools, and it has helped me so much to have these practices in my backpocket during such a difficult time. So I am so grateful to her, and I hope that today's conversation will introduce you to some ideas that will be helpful to you during the ups and downs of your own unique motherhood and life situations.
Woven throughout today's episode, Layne guides us through several quick meditations perfect for busy, overstimulated moms, and I wanted to make sure that you know that you can get a free copy of these practices by clicking here.
3 KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Stop trying to calm your mind first. Your nervous system reacts before your mind even has time to think, which means all the planning and organizing in the world won't get you to calm if your body doesn't feel safe. The body has to come first, and you can often remind your body that it is safe wit a simple 30-60 second breathing exercise, like the ones that Layne lead us through during this conversation.
- Small pauses change the whole day. You don't need forty-five minutes on a yoga mat to cultivate a more steady nervous system. You need thirty to ninety seconds in your car, in the school pickup line, at the sink... all throughout your day. And the more you practice, the more accessible it becomes.
- You don't need to do more as an overwhelmed mom, you just need more support. Your kids feel your nervous system before they hear your words, so when you learn to regulate yourself, when you support your own nervous system, you're not just helping you, you're changing the whole emotional temperature of your home.
I am so grateful for this conversation with Layne. I had never meditated during an interview, and that was much-needed! I actually did go lie down and take a rest after our conversation, and it felt heavenly!
