But they are also great, and I think it’s important to celebrate them. Our teenagers deserve a better reputation than the one we’ve handed them, and we get to be the ones who give it to them.

I want to say something out loud that I think a lo

I want to say something out loud that I think a lot of moms need permission to hear: I don’t sign up to be a room mom. 😆

Not because I don’t care about my kids’ school, and not because I’m too busy. It’s just that elaborate parties and fancy games aren’t what light me up, and I don’t treat that as a flaw I need to fix.

Instead, I know my values, and I know my time is limited, so I try to make commitments that align with my values.

Values are your judgment of what’s important in life, and there’s no such thing as good or bad ones. There are just different ones. The mom who loves planning the incredible class party is living out something real about herself, and so is the mom who volunteers to run the reading program instead. Neither one is the more devoted mother.

What I’ve found is that once you can name your own values, the whole sign-up season feels so much easier. You’re not weighing every opportunity against what a “good mom” would do. You’re weighing it against what’s actually true about you, and that means the answers come a lot faster, and with a lot less guilt.

The funny thing about this list is that it’s less about DOING, and more about NOT doing...

Don’t ask so many questions. Don’t share too many of your own stories. Don’t hurry them toward a friend group. Even the two tips that are actual action items are things your teen does with your help, not things you do for them.

That’s a hard shift, because when our kids are having a rough time, the pull to fix it is so strong. We want to call the school, solve the lunch table, and handle the whole thing from the outside where we can see it.

Somewhere around junior high, our job starts changing from doing it for them to standing nearby while they do it. Which is so, so, so much harder.

But stepping back, and coaching instead of fixing, is its own kind of work. It’s how they learn they can handle hard things, which builds resilience and grit. And it is very, very important work.

Standing nearby and letting them do it is hard. But you can do hard things, and so can they. Send this to a friend who’s in the thick of it too. 💜

I want to be clear that I’m not against parenting

I want to be clear that I’m not against parenting strategies. I’ve spent years interviewing the people who teach them, I use them in my own home, and some of them have made a real difference for our family.

But I’ve noticed that they tend to work best for moms who already have some solid ground under them, and they tend to fall apart for moms who are running on empty.

Because when you’re depleted and unsure of yourself, even a good strategy feels like one more thing you’re failing at. And when you know who you are and your own needs are being met, the same strategy suddenly feels doable, and you can adapt it to your family instead of following it exactly.

That’s why I always start with you when I teach moms how to find more joy. I teach moms to follow these three pillars: Know Yourself, then Honor Your Needs, and then Love Your People. Working in that order is how you take the parenting strategies and make them work for your family.

Can we talk about why another family’s schedule can make us feel so unsettled?

It’s usually not really about the soccer team or the piano lessons. It’s that somewhere deep down, we read their choices as evidence that there’s a right way to do this, and that maybe we’re not doing it.

But comparison almost always falls apart under one simple question: what if we’re not even trying to build the same thing?

The family with the color-coded activity calendar might be building a life around excellence and achievement, and it genuinely fits them. Your family might be building a life around connection, or creativity, or breathing room, and that fits you. These are two completely different blueprints, and neither one is wrong.

The moms we work with tell us this shift from comparison to values-focused parenting changes everything. Once you can name what your family actually values, other people’s choices become information instead of accusation, and you can cheer for “that” family from the sidelines instead of measuring yourself against them.

We’re not necessarily lying awake wondering if we got the right binder.

Of course we want the right school supplies, the lunch account loaded, and the online forms signed. But the emotional stuff is what’s actually stressful, and it’s what keeps us (and our kids) up at night. 🫶
